How to Find a Reputable Labrador Breeder

Finding a reputable breeder is a crucial step in bringing home a new member of your family. Labradors are not all the same; likewise the people that raise Labradors differ widely, operating their breeding programs in a variety of ways. You need to feel comfortable that you are getting a healthy, well socialized puppy that is a good match for your family. A well-bred puppy from a reputable breeder will literally enhance the quality of your everyday life.

° Please remember that a quality puppy from a reputable breeder costs more to purchase and may require patience in waiting for the right puppy as most reputable breeders have waiting lists and puppies are often sold before they are born or shortly thereafter. However, what you receive in return is a healthy, well socialized, genetically sound puppy. So please be careful not to purchase a puppy based solely on price and availability.

° A reputable breeder will do the required health testing on their adult dogs before they are considered for breeding. At Summerland Labradors our adult dogs are x-rayed and cleared for hip and elbow dysplasia through the OFA (Orthopedic Foundation For Animals), they have cardiac testing done to be sure they are not affected with a genetic heart disease, our dogs eyes are cleared annually by a Veterinary Ophthalmologist . Either the sire or dam must be PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) and EIC (Exercise Induced Collapse) clear as both parents would need to be carriers for the offspring to be affected.

° Reputable breeders place their pet puppies on an “AKC Limited Registration” with a spay/neuter contract. While a dog registered with AKC Limited Registration is ineligible to produce AKC registered puppies or to compete in conformation classes, they are eligible to be entered in any other AKC Licensed or member events including: Obedience, Rally, Agility and Hunt tests. Summerland pet puppies must by contract be spayed/neutered after 12 months of age and before 18 months of age. We do not recommend spaying/neutering any sooner than this as this is a large breed dog that needs the hormones to grow properly. Early spay/neuter can lead to joint problems amongst other health issues.

° Reputable breeders will take back a puppy that they have produced at any time for the life of the dog, for any reason. This is widely considered the hallmark of responsible breeding, and the only sure way to make rescues/shelters less crowded. Summerland's agreement includes a stipulation that we be notified if you are unable to keep your Lab. We require that you give us first right of refusal should you ever need to re-home your dog, regardless of circumstances.
